- Italian Release
Stormbringer" is the ninth studio album by Deep Purple, released in December 1974. On this album, the soul and funk elements that were only hinted are much more prominent. Many fans consider Stormbringer to be a major turning point in the band, and the mark of an era's end.
1974, and Deep Purple weren't content to rest on their laurels. Nope, they were brewing a sonic storm in Munich, and that tempest poured onto Italian vinyl as "Stormbringer." Forget those smoke-filled rooms where "Machine Head" blasted - this was a different beast, a funky, soulful espresso jolt to the system.
Deep Purple, once the kings of hard rock thunder, were now messing with the rhythm and blues. It was a time of change, man. Rock was getting a makeover, and these Brits weren't afraid to try on some new threads. Funk riffs slithered around the bluesy core, David Coverdale crooned with a newfound soul, and hints of disco shimmered through the haze.
"Stormbringer" was a musical mutiny, a rebellion against their own sound. "Lady Double Dealer" and the title track strutted with a swagger that was pure groove. "The Gypsy" unleashed a funk-rock fusion that was downright infectious, while "Soldier of Fortune" showcased a softer, introspective side with its soulful balladry. But hold on, purists cried foul! Where were the guitar-fueled anthems? Ritchie Blackmore, the riff-master himself, wasn't digging it. He wanted to rock, not roll. Tensions simmered, a prelude to his grand exit, further fueling the album's controversial aura.
Deep Purple produced the album themselves, alongside Martin Birch, the sonic wizard who'd helmed their earlier triumphs. They cooked up this sonic stew in Musicland Studios, Munich, the German heart of their musical experimentation. Then, that Italian pressing hit the shelves, delivering the sound in all its caffeinated glory.
Critics scoffed, fans were divided. "Stormbringer" was a betrayal to some, a bold leap forward to others. But man, it was never dull. It was messy, ambitious, a damn fine mix of soul-infused rock and funky swagger. It wasn't the Deep Purple of old, but it was undeniably Deep Purple - evolving, experimenting, daring to piss off their audience.
