ACE FREHLEY - Frehley’s Comet 12" Vinyl LP Album

- The Spaceman’s Triumphant Return to Rock – 1987’s Hard-Hitting Solo Statement

Released in 1987, Frehley’s Comet marked Ace Frehley’s first full album after parting ways with Kiss. Showcasing his signature guitar style and space-themed flair, the record blends hard rock anthems like "Rock Soldiers" with melodic cuts such as "Into the Night". Backed by a strong band and produced by Eddie Kramer, this LP cemented Frehley’s place as a solo force in glam-era heavy metal.

"Frehley's Comet" Album Description:

In 1987, the music landscape was a curious beast. Glam rock's glitter had faded, replaced by the angst-ridden leather of Guns N' Roses and the neon theatrics of Bon Jovi. It was a time of big hair and even bigger egos, and against this backdrop, former Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley unleashed Frehley's Comet, his triumphant second solo album and the first released since officially parting ways with Kiss (we all remember the 1978 original, of course).

Frehley, forever known as "The Spaceman," had never been shy about his love of all things extraterrestrial. Frehley's Comet embraced that love fully, with its chrome-plated cover art depicting a sleek spaceship soaring through a starfield. This wasn't a subtle affair; Frehley was planting his flag firmly in the realm of unapologetic hard rock.

But peel back the spaceship exterior and you'll find a surprisingly diverse musical exploration. Sure, there are plenty of trademark Frehley scorchers like the opener "Rock Soldiers" and the fist-pumping "We Got Your Rock," but there are also moments of genuine tenderness, like the ballad "Love Me Right." He even tackled "Into the Night," a Russ Ballard cover that had Ace chasing the charts. While its slick, synth-kissed pop-rock sound raised a few purist eyebrows, that shimmering production was already baked into Ballard's original track—Frehley just polished it until it gleamed.

Frehley wasn't exactly known for his vocal prowess, but here he lets loose with a raw, passionate delivery that perfectly complements the music. Co-produced by Ace Frehley himself alongside the veteran Eddie Kramer, a man whose sonic history stretched from Jimi Hendrix to Led Zeppelin, the album boasts a crisp, polished sound that allows Frehley's riffs and solos to truly shine. The tracks were captured not at the ubiquitous Record Plant, but across legendary New York haunts like Right Track Studios and Sound Ideas. Frehley's Comet feels like a defiant roar amidst the changing landscape of '80s rock, a perfectly preserved sonic artifact of an analog Spaceman conquering a digital world.

Album Front Cover Photo
Front cover of the 1987 Ace Frehley Frehley's Comet LP. It features a starry space background with a glowing comet and a metallic logo resembling a planet with the words Frehley's Comet in bold red and yellow lettering. The artist's name appears at the top in a matching font.

Frehley's Comet album cover art presents a bold, cosmic design that reflects the artist’s Spaceman persona. The background is a dense, dark blue starfield filled with dozens of small, bright stars scattered throughout the top left to bottom right. A prominent white comet streaks diagonally across the upper right quadrant, trailing a glowing path across the galaxy-like sky.

The band name ACE FREHLEY is displayed at the top center in large, capitalized letters. The text is colored in red with a yellow gradient and a bold black shadow, giving it a three-dimensional pop-out effect. Near the center of the composition is a large metallic silver-blue planet or sphere, from which two sharp metallic banners extend.

These banners contain the text FREHLEY'S COMET, each word in the same red-yellow gradient and angular font as the artist’s name above. The design resembles a space mission emblem, and the vivid red-to-blue gradient background in the lower right corner adds a fiery, atmospheric glow that contrasts with the cool blue of space.

This 1987 German pressing is notable for its custom inner sleeve and striking artwork, making it visually distinctive among Ace Frehley’s solo releases.

The back cover of Frehley's Comet presents a highly stylized image of the band set against a dramatic, deep-space background filled with stars and glowing nebulae. A blue-to-purple cosmic gradient forms the backdrop, matching the galactic theme established on the front cover.

Centered at the bottom half of the cover, all four band members—Anton Fig, Ace Frehley, John Regan, and Tod Howarth—pose confidently in coordinated black outfits, each wearing a circular "WM" badge on their lapel. Frehley, in particular, stands out in leather pants and a flowing black coat, his hand casually resting on Regan’s shoulder.

The track listing for both sides appears at the top in bold red font. Side One includes “Rock Soldiers,” “Breakout,” and “Into the Night,” while Side Two features “Love Me Right,” “Dolls,” and the instrumental closer “Fractured Too.” Below the track list, in smaller red text, are detailed production credits, including mentions of Eddie Kramer, Jon Zazula, and various engineers and studios across New York.
