Album Description:

The Italian 12" LP release of "Successo: Rock Giants Vol. 1" featuring Jimi Hendrix is a fascinating piece of 1970s European rock history. Released by Polydor / Successo in Italy around 1968, this compilation captures Hendrix’s most defining early recordings, including "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze," and "The Wind Cries Mary."

The album presents a vibrant cross-section of Hendrix’s sound, from blues-infused rock to psychedelic experimentation. Italian liner notes by Daniele Caroli frame the release as a celebration of Hendrix’s groundbreaking artistry—bridging traditional rhythm and blues roots with the expanding sonic landscapes of late 1960s rock.

Background and Context

This Italian release arrived during a period when Hendrix’s fame had spread across Europe, fueled by his electrifying live shows and revolutionary studio work. The compilation’s title, “Rock Giants,” reflects the growing recognition of Hendrix as a larger-than-life figure in the evolution of rock music. Issued under the Successo imprint of Polydor, it offered Italian listeners an accessible way to experience the most essential Hendrix tracks on high-quality vinyl.

Musical Highlights

The album opens with "Hey Joe"—the song that first introduced Jimi Hendrix to the world. Its slow-burning, blues-driven melody and tragic storytelling remain timeless. Hendrix’s performance combines raw emotional tension with the technical brilliance of his Stratocaster, perfectly setting the tone for the rest of the record.

Following “Hey Joe,” listeners are swept into the charged energy of "Purple Haze" and "The Wind Cries Mary," two songs that helped define the psychedelic era. Side Two continues with Hendrix staples such as "Foxy Lady," "Stone Free," and "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)"—each track illustrating his innovative guitar tone, soulful expression, and rhythmic intensity. The closing songs "Gipsy Eyes" and "Come On (Let the Good Times Roll)" underline Hendrix’s deep roots in blues and R&B, reinterpreted through his visionary approach to rock.

Production and Audio Quality

The album was produced and directed by Jimi Hendrix himself, and this Italian pressing is noted among collectors for its audiophile-quality remastering. The sound remains detailed, with powerful dynamics that emphasize Hendrix’s intricate guitar layering and studio experimentation. Despite minor surface noise, the record retains remarkable clarity—testament to the pressing standards of Polydor Italy during that era.

Collector’s Appeal

The Italian edition of "Successo: Rock Giants Vol. 1" stands out for its distinctive cover design and localized presentation. The album’s back cover includes extensive Italian liner notes—something rare for Hendrix releases outside the English-speaking world. It has become a sought-after collectible, both for its audio fidelity and its historical connection to Hendrix’s expanding European legacy.

English Translation

In addition to including a previously unreleased track on 33 rpm, “Stone Free,” this collection stands out as an essential and stimulating document for those who want to approach the most creative side of Jimi Hendrix — the one from the Experience years (1966–68). The African-American guitarist (with perilous ancestry) from Seattle, discovered by English rock musician Chas Chandler at the Greenwich Village in New York, was catapulted into the rhythm & blues scene of London in 1966 — nonconformist and hungry for novelty — where various musical trends clashed, from the “blues revival” to psychedelic experimentation.

Completed by bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, the Jimi Hendrix Experience achieved immediate popularity, so much so that within four years, four 45s climbed the British hit parades of ’67: “Hey Joe,” “Purple Haze,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” and “Burning of the Midnight Lamp” (all included here). From these records, Hendrix emerged as an extraordinary figure — author of intense, surreal songs, incisive singer, and above all, an extremely imaginative and innovative guitarist.

“Foxy Lady” (from the album “Are You Experienced?”), “Crosstown Traffic,” and “Gypsy Eyes” were also released on 45s in the USA, where the artist’s fame grew during a tour with the Monkees (1967) and his enthusiastic appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival (later that same year). The last two tracks mentioned came from the double album “Electric Ladyland,” as did “Voodoo Chile” (a posthumous hit for the artist) and “Come On.”

After the Experience broke up in ’69, Hendrix entered a chaotic period of his life, reflected in his unstable collaborations with various musicians — though this also led to an outstanding “performance” at the Woodstock Festival. In ’70, ten days after his return from the Isle of Wight Festival, Hendrix’s life was cut short by an overdose of barbiturates. His name remains forever linked to the history of rock music as one of its most important figures. In concert (as remembered from a legendary Milan performance), Jimi combined virtuosity with an overwhelming sense of communicative power.

Testo Originale Italiano

Of The Midnight Lamp” (tutti titoli qui inclusi).

I due ultimi brani citati provenivano dall’album doppio “Electric Ladyland”, come pure “Voodoo Chile” (successo postumo dell’artista) e “Come On”.

As a lifelong fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan, I’ve always been blown away by his interpretation of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile.” It’s not just a cover — it’s a heartfelt tribute that captures the spirit of Hendrix while showcasing SRV’s own fiery blues style. Every bend, every note, and every burst of feedback feels alive, raw, and deeply emotional. For me, it remains one of the most powerful and unforgettable performances ever recorded — easily one of my all-time favorite tracks. Raise the volume to 11

On the left side, a vertical photo strip contrasts this energy with a candid image of Hendrix sitting thoughtfully, holding a bottle, dressed in a casual denim shirt and pants with black boots. This juxtaposition between introspection and electric performance captures the two sides of Hendrix’s persona — the quiet thinker and the explosive showman.

The cover’s red-and-black frame, part of the Successo Rock Giants series design, includes the album title and track list printed in clean white type. The top-left “Successo” logo, set diagonally in gold script, ties it visually to other releases in the same Italian compilation line.
