Motley Crue is a legendary American rock band that rose to prominence in the 1980s and has continued to captivate audiences with their music and live performances. Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1981, the band is known for their unique blend of hard rock, heavy metal, and glam rock, as well as their rebellious and often controversial image.
Motley Crue was founded by bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, who were joined by guitarist Mick Mars and vocalist Vince Neil. The band quickly made a name for themselves on the Sunset Strip, a hotbed of rock and roll activity in Los Angeles. They released their debut album, "Too Fast for Love," in 1981, which quickly gained popularity among fans and critics alike. The album showcased the band's raw, hard-driving sound and featured several standout tracks, including "Live Wire" and "Piece of Your Action."
Motley Crue's second album, "Shout at the Devil," was released in 1983 and marked a significant turning point for the band. With its more polished sound and increased emphasis on melody and songwriting, the album became a commercial success and helped establish Motley Crue as one of the leading bands of the 1980s. Hits such as "Looks That Kill" and "Too Young to Fall in Love" helped propel the band to even greater heights.
The band continued to release successful albums throughout the 1980s, including "Theatre of Pain" (1985), "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1987), and "Dr. Feelgood" (1989). The latter album, which featured hits such as "Kickstart My Heart" and "Without You," was a massive commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard charts and selling over 6 million copies in the United States alone. Motley Crue had become one of the most popular and influential bands in the world, with their hard-driving sound, provocative lyrics, and larger-than-life image capturing the attention of fans worldwide.
Despite their success, Motley Crue was no stranger to controversy. The band's excessive partying and drug use was well documented, with their exploits often making headlines in the tabloids. They were also criticized by some for their misogynistic lyrics and objectification of women. However, the band's fans remained loyal, and Motley Crue continued to push the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in the music industry.
In the early 1990s, Motley Crue's popularity began to wane, as the rise of grunge and alternative rock led to a shift in musical tastes. The band experienced several lineup changes and took a hiatus from recording and touring. However, they continued to maintain a dedicated fan base, and in 2004, they reunited for a highly successful tour. They released a new album, "Saints of Los Angeles," in 2008, which was well-received by fans and critics.
Motley Crue officially retired from touring in 2015, after a highly successful "Final Tour" that spanned several years and took them to all corners of the globe. The band's legacy, however, continues to live on, with their music still being played on the radio and streamed online, and their influence being felt in the music of countless artists who have followed in their footsteps.
