- Original first release collector's item, hand-numbered limited edition of 500 copies
“20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal” captures a young King Diamond before the corpse paint and occult theatrics, fronting his pre–Mercyful Fate band Black Rose. Recorded in the late 1970s and released decades later, it’s a raw glimpse into the roots of Danish heavy metal — a smoky basement brew of hard rock, prog flourishes, and unfiltered energy. King’s distinctive voice and flair for drama were already emerging, surrounded by the fiery guitars of Jorn Bittcher and the vintage hum of Ibe Ebemark’s Moog. This is where the legend first learned to roar.
This album "KING DIAMOND AND BLACK ROSE - 20 Years Ago - A Night Of Rehearsal" is an album released as a King Diamond album. In fact it is a rehearsal tape of a pre-Mercyful Fate band featuring King Diamond on vocals, named Black Rose.
"20 Years Ago - A Night of Rehearsal" is a live album by Danish heavy metal vocalist King Diamond and his former band "Black Rose"", released in 2001. The 12" LP vinyl edition of the album captures a rare glimpse into the early days of King Diamond's career, featuring a recording of a rehearsal session from 1981, before the band's debut album was released.
The album showcases the raw and unpolished sound of "Black Rose"", with heavy riffs, fast-paced drumming, and King Diamond's signature high-pitched vocals.
The rehearsal recording has a lo-fi quality that adds to the album's charm and authenticity, giving listeners a sense of what it was like to be in the room with the band as they honed their craft. The album also includes liner notes from King Diamond himself, providing insight into the band's early days and the recording process for the rehearsal session.

First of all, I hope you will enjoy this music as much as I still do today.
Even though the music is not as raw and heavy as Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, it's still very aggressive in its own way and quite complex at times. It blows my mind that back then I never really acknowledged how good the musicianship of the band was.
Our live-set mostly consisted of our own songs, with a few Deep Purple songs added. Apart from songs like “Black Night,” “Highway Star” and “Child in Time,” we would also play some of the more obscure Purple songs, such as “Fools” and “Living Wreck.”
Our stage show was quite controversial for the time, but I will get to that a little later.
I don’t know why, but listening to this music always makes me crave a beer. Could it be that the old wounds never quite healed from rehearsing 4 times a week in a storage room under a bar? A storage room loaded with cases and cases of beer. We could drink as many as we wanted, as long as we paid the owner at the end of each month. And we did! How often Jesper and I got stuck upstairs after rehearsals.
Oh well, we were young and crazy then. I have never really gotten rid of the crazy part.
The following is a translation of an article in the biggest Danish rock magazine of the time:
The headline read: “Black Rose: Violently Insane Musicians???”
The photo showed me in full makeup holding a human skull, while being stabbed by the drummer. The 3 other band members looked as if they didn’t know that anything wrong was going on.
Under the photo it said: “Black Rose when they live as human beings. When they are on stage they are so much worse, and pure insanity seems to invade them.”
The article itself read: “Black Rose is insane, nerve-wrecking, exciting, fantastic, vomitingly wonderful. There are many opinions and descriptions of the great new Danish rock band ‘Black Rose,’ which even before having gone completely through here in Denmark, has shown promise of a great career abroad. The band’s manager, Robert Meinertz, has no doubt, that they are the biggest thing that has happened for Danish music, and that they are the first Danish band with a real chance to make it in the USA. Black Rose plays REAL DEMANDING ROCK!! Violent rock if you will. They have a stage show that would have Kiss and Alice Cooper envy them. They shock and hypnotize their audience with effects such as bombs, chopped up pig’s heads, decapitated babies, axes and knives, and pig’s blood and pig’s eyes en masse, plus a certain brutality which could only come from real psychopathic minds, and, on top of that, they are extremely skillful musicians. There is no doubt that Robert Meinertz has struck gold. Black Rose belongs among the best on the international music scene.”
Pretty bold statement!!! Exaggerated? Probably. All of it? No. We did have a crazy show, but I don’t think Kiss or Alice Cooper would have felt threatened by us at the time. To this day, none of them know that this band ever existed. Not too many people do.

The front cover of 20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal presents a striking black-and-white image that encapsulates the unfiltered theatricality of King Diamond’s formative years. He stands before a wall of amplifiers, face painted in early corpse makeup — white foundation marked with black symmetrical streaks that exaggerate his expressions.
Wearing a loose, knotted white robe that falls open at the chest, King Diamond performs a deliberately over-the-top gesture: one hand shaped like a pistol pressed to his temple, the other lifting a human skull as though in conversation. The contrast between mock violence and dark humor mirrors the tone of the band’s experimental live energy.
The bold serif logo “King Diamond” arcs across the top left, its tail curling under the words and Black Rose. In the bottom right corner, delicate cursive lettering reads 20 years ago – A night of rehearsal, giving the cover the feel of an unearthed relic. The lighting highlights his manic grin, the gleam of stage jewelry, and the texture of vintage gear — a visual time capsule from the smoky rehearsal rooms of late-’70s Denmark.
The image’s grain and high contrast emphasize its authenticity, enhancing the archival aura that collectors value. It’s both chaotic and iconic — a raw visual echo of the early roots of Danish heavy metal and the theatrical madness that would later define King Diamond’s career.
The back cover of 20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal presents a structured, archival-style design balancing text, imagery, and logos in crisp monochrome. Two vertical tracklists frame the composition: Side Black on the left with songs like “Locked Up In The Snow,” “Crazy Tonight,” and “The End,” and Side Rose on the right featuring “Virgin,” “Kill For Fun,” and “I Need Blood.”
Centered between them, the album’s title 20 years ago – A night of rehearsal appears in elegant serif lettering, evoking the reflective tone of the release. Beneath it, a black-and-white photo captures the full band lineup — five men in casual rock attire, their expressions caught between humor and menace. King Diamond stands in the middle, mouth wide open in mid-scream, framed by fellow musicians in leather jackets and sunglasses.
To the lower left, the King Diamond logo and Archaic Temple Productions credit sit above text stating the release’s exclusivity under Metal Blade Records. A small notation reads Collector’s Item – Limited Edition 48/500 Copies, highlighting its rarity. On the right side, the Black Rose logo—a stylized skull embedded in a rose bloom—appears above the mastering credits for Nomad Recording Studio in Dallas, Texas, handled by King Diamond, Kol Marshall, and Gary Long.
The design combines stark contrast, precise typography, and a handmade quality typical of underground metal releases. Every element—from the glossy band photo to the handwritten edition number—reinforces the album’s cult aura and the authenticity of its rehearsal-era roots.
The custom inner sleeve of 20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal serves as both memoir and artifact, printed in crisp white text on a charcoal background. The essay, written by King Diamond himself, reads like a personal letter to fans, reminiscing about Black Rose’s rehearsal days, their chaotic energy, and the youthful excess that defined the band’s birth.
The sleeve text unfolds in first-person narrative: King recalls endless practice sessions four nights a week in a beer-filled storage room beneath a bar, and the bizarre joy of paying the owner monthly for every bottle consumed. He describes the band’s stage antics — mock violence, theatrical blood, and the infamous Danish press article that labeled them “violently insane musicians.” The entire story captures the pre-Mercyful Fate atmosphere: half chaos, half creative explosion.
Along both edges of the page, the vertically embossed words King Diamond Black Rose add depth and texture, emphasizing the connection between past and present. Near the bottom left appears the logo Words by King Diamond above a small black-and-white photo of the band; to the right, a miniature magazine reproduction titled Vanvids-Musikere (“Mad Musicians”) anchors the anecdote’s authenticity. The typographic layout mimics an old rock magazine spread, mixing archival reverence with manic energy.
The inner sleeve feels intimate and self-aware — a nostalgic confession framed in the visual language of underground heavy metal. It invites the reader to experience the madness, sweat, and sound that forged the earliest incarnation of King Diamond’s musical identity.
The Side One record label of 20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal embraces pure minimalism. Set against a smooth matte gray background, it displays the bold white King Diamond logo across the top, complete with the familiar lightning-styled tail beneath the name. Just below, a small, elegant and connects to the band’s name Black Rose, printed in flowing gothic script that dominates the visual field.
The album title appears neatly centered along the lower rim: 20 years ago – A night of rehearsal, rendered in the same white serif font as the rest of the text. To the left edge, the side indicator “A.” subtly anchors the layout, maintaining balance without breaking the symmetry. The label’s design rejects clutter — no tracklist, no color — focusing entirely on form, font, and tone.
This stripped-back aesthetic is characteristic of limited collector pressings. Its understated beauty lies in precision: monochrome contrast, classic typography, and the tactile simplicity of black vinyl. The absence of ornate decoration reinforces the authenticity of this release, drawing the listener’s attention to the sound itself — the raw, unfiltered rehearsal energy preserved in analog form.
Every detail, from the crisp type alignment to the gentle sheen of the paper stock, signals a deliberate throwback to the early metal underground — an homage to a time when music spoke louder than marketing.
The Side Two label of 20 Years Ago – A Night of Rehearsal continues the album’s elegant, minimalist design language. A deep gray background forms the canvas for crisp white typography, where the bold King Diamond logo once again commands the top half of the layout. Its iconic, curving tail underlines the text, bridging to the small centered word and above the equally prominent Black Rose title in flowing gothic script.
Near the lower curve of the label, the album title 20 years ago – A night of rehearsal is printed in graceful serif font, completing the design with subtle symmetry. The side designation “B.” appears neatly on the left, ensuring functional clarity without distracting from the artwork’s balance. The spindle hole sits perfectly centered within the composition, reinforcing the circular rhythm of the design.
The absence of track listings or additional markings preserves the stripped-back, collector-grade look of the pressing. Its minimalist charm speaks to the analog purity of underground releases — a statement of intent from musicians focused purely on the music rather than marketing.
When viewed together, Sides A and B form a perfectly mirrored pair — understated, disciplined, and timeless, embodying the ethos of a rehearsal recording reborn as a cult collector’s item.
