"Cold Hearted Extended Version" Album Description:
Needle down, and "Cold Hearted" doesn’t stroll in politely. It kicks the door, steals the light, and turns your living room into a late-80s rehearsal space where somebody is definitely sweating on purpose. This is pop with a spine: dance-pop with that new jack swing snap, all sharp edges and guilty-pleasure momentum.
I always liked that Abdul doesn’t plead here. She points. She tests. She basically tells the guy to stop acting innocent and pick a lane. It’s accusatory, a little teasing, and just mean enough to be fun. The beat keeps moving like it’s late for something, and her voice rides it like she’s counting steps in her head and daring you to fall behind.
And then there’s the video: David Fincher taking a pop single and filming it like a stylish little threat. Semi-nude dancers, scaffolding, the whole “music executives watching” setup where everybody pretends they’re above it while clearly not being above it at all. MTV didn’t just play it, it basically installed it in your television for weeks.
Behind the glass, Elliot Wolff builds the machine and Keith "K.C." Cohen helps tighten the bolts. You can hear the choices: drum programming that snaps instead of thumps, synths that jab instead of float, and just enough grit so it doesn’t melt into wallpaper. On the 12" maxi, that extra space matters. The extended version breathes, stretches, and even sneaks in the extra rap section that later gets spliced into the video like a wink from the control room.
Bottom line: this is the kind of 12" you put on when you need the house to move a little faster. Cleaning, cooking, mood reset, whatever. If that sounds ridiculous, fine. The record doesn’t care. That’s sort of the point.
