- 2017 Metal Blade Records with Blood Dripping Axe Logo

Alright, metalheads, buckle up and prepare for a blast from the past that'll rattle your bones and leave your ears ringing! We're diving headfirst into Omen's "Battle Cry," a 1984 classic that's as fresh and ferocious today as it was back when hairspray was a weapon and spandex was armor.

This ain't no wimpy ballad-fest, folks. We're talking pure, unadulterated heavy metal, straight outta the golden age when guitars roared, drums thundered, and vocals soared higher than a bald eagle on steroids.

So grab your air guitar, crank the volume to 11, and let J.D. Kimball's banshee wail transport you to a world of epic battles, mythical creatures, and enough testosterone to fuel a monster truck rally. Omen's "Battle Cry" is a glorious reminder that metal ain't just music, it's a way of life. And this album, my friends, is the soundtrack to a life well-rocked.

OMEN'S BATTLE CRY: A RETROSPECTIVE ROAR IN THE FACE OF TIME
Album Description:

In the world of heavy metal, few albums capture the raw, untamed spirit of the genre's formative years quite like Omen's 1984 debut, "Battle Cry." This 2017 reissue by Metal Blade Records serves as a sonic time capsule, transporting us back to an era when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was in full swing, influencing a legion of American bands hungry to forge their own metallic path.

Historical Context: Riding the New Wave

The early 1980s was a fertile breeding ground for heavy metal. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Saxon were leading the charge in Britain, their twin-guitar harmonies, galloping rhythms, and epic tales of mythology and battle captivating a generation of headbangers. Omen, hailing from Los Angeles, California, emerged from this cauldron of creativity, drawing inspiration from their British counterparts while injecting their own brand of American bravado into the mix.

Musical Exploration: A Cry of Defiance

"Battle Cry" is a relentless assault of classic heavy metal tropes. From the opening salvo of "Death Rider," with its galloping riffs and J.D. Kimball's soaring vocals, to the anthemic title track, Omen leaves no doubt about their intent: to conquer the world with their music. Kenny Powell's fiery guitar solos, Jody Henry's thunderous bass lines, and Steve Wittig's pummeling drums create a sonic maelstrom that is both exhilarating and exhausting.

Genre Fusion: Classic Metal with a Melodic Edge

While firmly rooted in the NWOBHM tradition, Omen also incorporated elements of American power metal into their sound. Kimball's vocals, reminiscent of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson, possess a melodic sensibility that sets them apart from many of their contemporaries. The band's songwriting, while steeped in tales of battle and fantasy, also explored themes of personal struggle and triumph, adding a layer of emotional depth to their music.

Controversies: None to Speak Of

Unlike some of their peers, Omen steered clear of controversy. Their music was focused on the sheer joy of heavy metal, devoid of any overt political or social commentary. This lack of controversy, while perhaps limiting their appeal to some, allowed them to focus on their craft and create an album that has stood the test of time.

Production Team: The Metal Blade Connection

"Battle Cry" was produced by Brian Slagel, the founder of Metal Blade Records. Slagel, a champion of underground metal, recognized Omen's potential and provided them with the platform to unleash their music upon the world. The album was recorded at Track Record Studios in Los Angeles, with Bill Metoyer at the helm. Metoyer, known for his work with Slayer and Armored Saint, captured the band's raw energy while ensuring a polished final product.

In his teenage years, Slagel immersed himself in the thriving metal scene of Los Angeles. He attended numerous concerts and built a vast network of connections with musicians, fans, and industry professionals. Recognizing the immense talent around him, Slagel decided to channel his passion into something more substantial.

In 1982, at the age of 21, Slagel founded Metal Blade Records in his small apartment. The label began as a means to support and promote local metal bands who were struggling to secure record deals. Slagel's vision was to create a platform where these talented artists could showcase their music and gain wider recognition.

Metal Blade Records released its first compilation album, "Metal Massacre", in 1982. The album featured now-legendary bands such as Metallica, Ratt, and Slayer, among others. This groundbreaking release played a significant role in catapulting Metal Blade Records and its roster of artists into the spotlight.

As the label continued to grow, Slagel nurtured and signed a multitude of influential bands, including Mercyful Fate , Cannibal Corpse, Gwar, and Armored Saint , to name just a few. His keen ear for talent and unwavering support for the genre helped Metal Blade Records become one of the most successful independent labels in the music industry.

Throughout his career, Slagel remained committed to preserving the authenticity and integrity of heavy metal music. While other labels veered towards more commercial sounds, Slagel stayed true to his roots, signing and promoting bands that embodied the spirit of the genre. He played a crucial role in the rise of the thrash metal movement, which had a profound impact on the music industry and inspired countless musicians.

In addition to his work as a label owner, Slagel has also served as a producer, working on albums for bands like Flotsam and Jetsam, Exciter, and Trouble. His deep understanding of the genre and his ability to bring out the best in artists allowed him to make significant contributions to their musical journeys.

Over the years, Brian Slagel's contributions to heavy metal have been widely recognized and celebrated. In 2010, he received the "Lifetime Achievement" award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods ceremony. His dedication to the genre has left an indelible mark on the music world, influencing generations of metal musicians and fans alike.

Today, Metal Blade Records continues to thrive under Slagel's guidance. His passion, perseverance, and unwavering belief in the power of heavy metal have cemented his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the genre. Brian Slagel's story is a testament to the transformative power of music and the immense impact that one person can have on an entire cultural movement.

In 1982, Slagel organized the release of a compilation album, featuring all local Los Angeles metal bands, called The New Heavy Metal Revue Presents Metal Massacre. The album featured the first recordings of Ratt, Steeler, Black 'n Blue, Malice, Avatar, Cirith Ungol, Bitch and Metallica.
