"Money and Cigarettes" Description:

Eric Clapton's 1983 album "Money and Cigarettes" arrived at a pivotal point in his long and influential career. This 12" vinyl LP captures Clapton balancing his established blues-rock roots with a more polished, pop-influenced sound reflective of the era.

Historical Context

The early 1980s saw a resurgence of mainstream interest in blues-influenced rock. Clapton, already a legend for his work with Cream and Derek and the Dominos, found himself in a musical landscape where his signature style was both revered and challenged by evolving audience tastes. "Money and Cigarettes" reflects his navigation of this changing terrain.

Musical Exploration

The album offers a mix of blues standards and original compositions. Covers like Albert King's "Crosscut Saw" showcase Clapton's reverence for tradition, while tracks like "I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart" lean towards a radio-friendly, pop-rock sensibility. Clapton's guitar work remains soulful and expressive throughout, but the production values mark a shift from the rawness of his earlier work.

Controversies

Clapton's personal struggles with addiction and alcoholism were well-known by this period. The album's title evokes these themes, although the lyrics don't delve deeply into autobiography. Despite this, some listeners found the title track in poor taste, highlighting the often difficult juxtaposition of an artist's personal battles with commercial success.

The Players

"Money and Cigarettes" features a star-studded lineup. Ry Cooder's slide guitar adds depth on several tracks, while Donald "Duck" Dunn (of Booker T. & the M.G.'s fame) provides a rock-solid bass foundation. Albert Lee's guitar complements Clapton's playing with bluesy flourishes.

Frontman in Focus

The focus, of course, remains on Clapton himself. His vocals retain their soulful edge, and his guitar solos are as expressive as ever. Yet, "Money and Cigarettes" captures an iconic artist wrestling with the tension between tradition and the demands of the contemporary music industry.

  • Compass Point Studios (Bahamas) Compass Point Studios, opened by Chris Blackwell in 1977 just outside Nassau, was less a paradise postcard than a working studio with sea air in its lungs and serious records being made behind the glass. The place mattered because it sounded like nowhere else once the right people got in the room. Grace Jones cut some of her sharpest work there, Talking Heads passed through, the Rolling Stones did too, and even Iron Maiden and AC/DC ended up on that same patch of Bahamian ground. I have always liked studios with a bit of salt and eccentricity in them; they usually beat the sterile ones. Compass Point had both, and you can still hear it on the records if the room is quiet enough and the coffee has gone cold.
