Michael Arnold Kamen was born on 15 April 1948 in New York City, the first child of Saul Kamen (born 24 January 1916) and Helen Whitehorn (born 1917).

On 18 November 2003, at the age of 55, he passed away in London, England. His longtime partner, Sandra Keenan (born 12 August 1950), outlived him by six years, passing away on 22 August 2009.
