"Blow Your Face Out Live" is the 1976 Live album by the American Rock band: J. Geits Band. It was recorded at two venues: Boston Garden and Cobo Hall, Detroit. This web page has photos of album covers, inner sleeves, record labels together with production details, musicians and track-listing.
This is the original album release with The track listing with several incorrect song titles. "Must of Got Lost" is listed as "Musta Got Lost", "Lookin' For A Love" as "Intro:", "Start All Over Again" as "Start All Over", and "Ain't Nothin' but a Houseparty" as "Houseparty". "Musta Got Lost" is possibly a simple error, but the other two are seemingly stylistic choices, as the label on the record notes the real titles of the songs in parentheses.
Live albums are a tricky beast. Some capture the raw energy of a band at their peak, others fall flat, sounding thin and lifeless compared to the studio versions. J. Geils Band's "Blow Your Face Out" isn't just a live album; it's a sonic sucker punch to the gut, a testament to the raw power of rock 'n' roll in its purest form.
Context is Key
Released in 1976, "Blow Your Face Out" arrived at a pivotal time in music history. Disco was starting to dominate the airwaves, punk was snarling from the underground, and stadium rock was becoming increasingly bloated and self-indulgent. J. Geils Band, however, remained firmly rooted in the blues-infused, R&B-fueled rock that had been their bread and butter since the early '70s.
No Nonsense Rock 'n' Roll
This wasn't a band interested in following trends or experimenting with synthesizers. They were a no-nonsense rock 'n' roll machine, fueled by the twin guitar attack of J. Geils and Danny Klein, the driving rhythm section of Magic Dick on harmonica and Stephen Jo Bladd on drums, and the gritty, soulful vocals of Peter Wolf.
Raw Power
"Blow Your Face Out" captures the band in their element, playing to a raucous crowd at various venues across the US. There's no studio trickery, no overdubs, just the raw, unadulterated sound of a band firing on all cylinders. From the opening bars of "Southside Shuffle" to the final notes of "Give It to Me," the energy is palpable, the excitement infectious.
Peter Wolf's Stage Presence
One cannot discuss "Blow Your Face Out" without mentioning the electrifying stage presence of frontman Peter Wolf. His charismatic howls, growls, and playful banter with the audience add another layer of excitement to the already energetic performances. His introductions to songs like "Musta Got Lost" are as memorable as the songs themselves.
A Setlist for the Ages
The setlist is a mix of fan favorites and deep cuts, showcasing the band's versatility and songwriting prowess. "Musta Got Lost" is a bluesy stomp, "Detroit Breakdown" a funky workout, and "Looking for a Love" a soulful ballad. But it's the extended jams on "Whammer Jammer" and "Back to Get Ya" that truly highlight the band's improvisational skills and musical chemistry.
Cover Song Selections
The band's ability to put their own spin on classic covers is also on full display. Their rendition of the Motown classic "Where Did Our Love Go" is infused with a raw energy that breathes new life into the song.
The Production
Produced by the band themselves along with longtime collaborator Bill Szymczyk (known for his work with the Eagles), "Blow Your Face Out" is a no-frills affair. The focus is on capturing the live experience, warts and all. There's no attempt to polish the rough edges or clean up the sound. This is a band at their rawest and most honest, and that's what makes it so damn exciting.
