- 1974 Italian Release on RCA VICTOR Records
This is the Italian release of "LOU REED - Rock & Roll Animal" is the live album by Lou Reed, released in 1974. In its original form, it features five songs from different periods of his creative career, including several songs by the Velvet Underground. The songs are all re-arranged into a powerful glam rock set. The musicians were Pentti Glan (drums) and Prakash John (bass) who would later form the second Alice Cooper band, Ray Colcord (keyboards), and Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter on guitars. The album was recorded live on December 21, 1973, at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York.
Forget the androgynous enigma of the Velvet Underground or the glam-rock glitter of 'Transformer.' In 1974, Lou Reed threw down the gauntlet with 'Rock & Roll Animal,' a live album that captured the raw, untamed energy of his music. This wasn't some polite concert recording; it was a sonic assault, a declaration of rock and roll's primal power.
1974 was a weird time, man. The Vietnam War was winding down, but the scars were still fresh. Nixon had resigned in disgrace, and the whole country was in a funk. Disco was starting to rear its ugly head, but rock and roll was still king, at least for a little while longer.
Reed, backed by the twin-guitar attack of Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, a pairing that would become legendary for their incendiary interplay, along with the powerhouse rhythm section of Prakash John and Pentti Glan, wasn't interested in subtlety. This was rock and roll stripped down to its essence: loud, fast, and unapologetically aggressive.
The album kicks off with 'Intro/Sweet Jane,' and it's like a punch to the gut. Wagner and Hunter's guitars intertwine in a frenzy of feedback and distortion, a sound that would influence countless guitarists in the years to come, while Reed's voice, a snarling mix of streetwise swagger and poetic vulnerability, cuts through the chaos. It's a statement of intent: this ain't no coffeehouse folk sing-along.
From there, it's a non-stop thrill ride. 'Heroin,' a Velvet Underground classic, is reimagined as a sprawling, epic jam, its dark undercurrents amplified by the band's ferocious energy, showcasing the song's timeless power. 'White Light/White Heat' is a relentless assault on the senses, a white-knuckle ride through the seedy underbelly of New York City, its raw intensity still shocking decades later.
But it's not all about brute force. 'Lady Day' is a tender ballad, a rare moment of quiet amidst the storm, offering a glimpse into Reed's softer side. Reed's voice, stripped of its usual sneer, is surprisingly gentle, revealing a vulnerability that's often hidden beneath his tough-guy exterior.
Recorded at Howard Stein's Academy of Music in New York City and produced by Reed and Bob Ezrin, a collaboration that brought a new level of sonic power to Reed's music, 'Rock & Roll Animal' is a testament to the power of live performance. There's no studio trickery here, just raw, unadulterated rock and roll. The band is locked in, feeding off each other's energy, pushing each other to the brink.
'Rock & Roll Animal' wasn't without its controversies. Some critics accused Reed of glorifying drug use and nihilism. But Reed, ever the provocateur, wasn't interested in playing by anyone's rules. He was a chronicler of the dark side, a poet of the streets, and he wasn't about to sugarcoat the truth.
This album is a snapshot of a moment in time, a document of rock and roll at its most visceral and uncompromising. It's a reminder that music can be more than just entertainment; it can be a catharsis, a rebellion, a lifeline. It can be a howl in the darkness, a middle finger to the establishment, a celebration of the human spirit's resilience. And in 1974, Lou Reed, with 'Rock & Roll Animal,' gave us all of that and more. It remains a landmark live album, capturing the essence of Reed's early solo career and solidifying his status as a true rock and roll icon.
