Two Virgins Controversy
Album Description:

The album front cover displayed Lennon and Ono frontally nude, while the rear cover featured them from behind. Distributors were prompted to sell the album in a plain brown wrapper, and copies of the album were impounded as obscenity in several jurisdictions.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1968 album "Two Virgins" is a groundbreaking experimental work that shocked and divided audiences upon its release. The uncensored 12" vinyl LP version of the album features a now-famous nude photograph of the couple on the cover, which sparked controversy and censorship efforts. Despite the controversy, "Two Virgins" remains a significant work in the history of experimental and avant-garde music.

"Two Virgins" was recorded in 1968 during a period of intense creativity for Lennon and Ono. The album is notable for its use of unconventional techniques and instruments, including tape loops, feedback, and unconventional percussion. The album also features Lennon and Ono's vocal improvisations and experimental poetry. The cover photograph, which depicts the couple in the nude, caused a stir among audiences and led to censorship efforts in some countries.

While "Two Virgins" received a mixed reception upon its release, it has since been recognized as an important work in the history of experimental and avant-garde music. The album paved the way for other experimental works in the late 1960s and early 1970s and influenced a generation of musicians. The album's cover photograph also challenged traditional notions of censorship and decency in art, and remains a controversial and iconic image.

John Lennon and Yoko Ono posed nude for the cover of their album "Two Virgins" as a statement of their commitment to each other and their artistic vision. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1970, Lennon explained that he and Ono wanted to "show that we were in love, that we were two virgins" and that the nudity was a way of stripping away the barriers between themselves and their audience. The cover photograph was intended to be a raw and honest expression of their relationship and their creative process.

John Lennon, You've Gone Too Far
Lennon Album Nudity, Not Art

By RICHARD ROBINSON NEW YORK — John Lennon and his love, Yoko Ono, may have created a money-making sensation with their "Two Virgins" nude album cover, but from one 18-year-old Beatles fan the word is "John, You've Gone Too Far This Time." Her name is Rainbo, and her comment about John is the title of her first record. "It's not art. It's just a dirty picture," said Rainbo, brushing her blond hair back to let her green eyes sparkle. Apparently, many Beatles fans agree since the record is creating a sensation in many parts of the country. "The record isn't really putting him down," explained Rainbo. "1 still love him, but he still went too far this time." Originally from Texas. Rainbo came to New York City several months ago to visit her cousin Rip Torn and his wife Geraldine Page. During her visit she met a record producer who asked her to record the song about John.

After hearing the tune, she agreed. Although she's upset with Lennon's photo, Rainbo doesn't nix all nudity. "Somebody could come along and use nudity and there is probably a way to do it if you use it right. But for the fans john has, the teenage girls, it was very tasteless.
