Stranglers - Dreamtime 12" Vinyl LP Album

Dreamtime is the album released by The Stranglers in 1986. The title track was inspired by a belief of the aboriginal peoples of Australia - called Dreamtime. This album appears to be a natural evolution from Aural Sculpture; it contains a mixture of upbeat and thoughtful tracks and includes the addition of pedal steel guitar to complement the horns. Highlights include "Always the Sun", which became a frequently-played live track and "Shaking like a Leaf", with its "Swing"-like feel.

Stranglers: Dreamtime - When the Sun Sets on Punk's Fury
Album Description:

In the smoldering ruins of punk's initial explosion, amidst the safety pins and spit, a band emerged that defied easy categorization. The Stranglers, a quartet of musical misfits, had always straddled the line between rebellion and refinement, their sound a volatile cocktail of punk's raw energy and a more sophisticated musical sensibility. With "Dreamtime," their 1986 offering, the band ventured even further into uncharted territory, their sonic explorations both thrilling and unsettling.

By the mid-80s, the Stranglers were no strangers to controversy. Their music had always pushed boundaries, their lyrics often veering into the taboo, and their live shows were notorious for their chaotic energy. But with "Dreamtime," the band seemed to be shedding their punk skin, embracing a more polished, atmospheric sound. This musical evolution was not without its detractors, with some fans lamenting the loss of the band's raw edge.

"Dreamtime" opens with "Always the Sun," a shimmering, synth-driven anthem that immediately sets the tone for the album. The song's infectious melody and Hugh Cornwell's melancholic vocals create a sense of bittersweet nostalgia, hinting at the album's underlying themes of loss and longing. The title track, "Dreamtime," is a sprawling, psychedelic epic, its swirling keyboards and hypnotic rhythms transporting the listener to a surreal dreamscape.

The album's production, helmed by the Stranglers themselves along with engineer Alan Winstanley at Utopia Studios, is lush and expansive, a far cry from the stripped-down sound of their earlier work. The band's musical palette has broadened, incorporating elements of world music, electronica, and even hints of jazz. The result is a sonic tapestry that is both rich and complex, inviting repeated listens.

"Dreamtime" is not without its moments of darkness. "Was It You?" is a brooding, atmospheric ballad that explores themes of betrayal and paranoia, while "You'll Always Reap What You Sow" is a cautionary tale delivered with a menacing growl. The album's closing track, "Too Precious," is a poignant reflection on mortality, its haunting melody lingering long after the final notes fade.

"Dreamtime" may not have been the album that some Stranglers fans were expecting, but it is a testament to the band's restless creativity and willingness to take risks. It is an album that defies easy categorization, its sonic landscape as vast and enigmatic as its title suggests. Love it or hate it, "Dreamtime" is a bold statement from a band that refused to be confined by genre or expectation. In a musical landscape dominated by fleeting trends, "Dreamtime" stands as a reminder that true artistry lies in the pursuit of the unexpected.
