Protector's "Golem" is a sonic eruption, a 12" vinyl LP that marked the 1988 debut of this German thrash/death metal titan. Released in a time of genre-bending experimentation, "Golem" stands as a potent document of raw energy and untamed aggression.
Originally forged in the fires of Phoenix Studio in 1988, "Golem" was sculpted by the expert hand of sound engineer Jorg Stegert. This LP is a time capsule of Protector's early years, capturing the unbridled fury and relentless riffs that would solidify their place in extreme metal history.
Aural Assault
"Golem" is a relentless barrage of thrashing guitars and guttural vocals. Each track explodes with a fury that is both chaotic and controlled. The album doesn't waste time on frills or technical acrobatics; it's a pure, unadulterated assault on the senses. Songs like "Delirium Tremens" and "Apocalyptic Revelations" showcase the band's ability to weave breakneck tempos with crushing breakdowns, while "Protector of Death" lives up to its name with its merciless onslaught.
More Than Just Thrash
While firmly rooted in the thrash metal tradition, "Golem" hints at the darker sounds that would come to define death metal. The guttural vocals and the band's willingness to explore slower, more atmospheric passages foreshadow the genre's evolution. Tracks like "Operation Plaga Extrema" and "Only the Strong Survive" showcase this experimentation, hinting at the sonic nightmares that lay ahead for extreme metal.
