The SPIRIT rock group was an American rock band that formed in 1967 in Los Angeles, California. The band was comprised of Jay Ferguson (vocals, percussion), Randy California (guitar, vocals) , Mark Andes (bass, backing vocals), Ed Cassidy (drums, percussion) , and John Locke (keyboards). The band's blend of psychedelic rock with jazz and blues influences helped set them apart from many of their contemporaries.
The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1968, featured key tracks like "Fresh Garbage" and "Mechanical World" and reached #31 on the Billboard 200 album chart. "Mechanical World" was also issued as a single and charted lower (outside the main Hot 100). Later in 1968, Spirit scored their biggest U.S. hit with "I Got a Line on You," which peaked at #25 on the Billboard singles chart and drove their second album, "The Family That Plays Together" (released December 1968), to #22 on the Billboard 200.
In 1969, the band released their third album, "Clear" (August 1969), which included "Dark Eyed Woman" and highlighted their more exploratory side. Around the same period, "1984" appeared as a 1969 single (and was later added as a bonus track on the 1996 reissue of "Clear"). Spirit were invited to play Woodstock in 1969 but did not perform there.
The band's fourth album, "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus," was released in 1970 and is often cited as their crowning statement. The album featured "Nature's Way" along with tracks like "Animal Zoo" and "Mr. Skin," balancing tighter songwriting with the band's eccentric, genre-hopping instincts.
Despite their success, the band experienced several lineup changes. John Locke's initial run ended in 1972, and Mark Andes left earlier (in 1971). Randy California also stepped away at points, but returned for multiple later runs; "Spirit of '76" is an album by Spirit (released in 1975), not a separate band formed by California.
On January 2, 1997, Randy California drowned off Molokai, Hawaii while rescuing his 12-year-old son from a rip current. Spirit's last years of activity ran up to 1997, and "California Blues" (1996) stands among their final studio releases rather than a 1998 farewell.
The SPIRIT rock group's legacy continues to live on, with their adventurous mix of rock, blues, and jazz, plus that restless musical curiosity, earning them a lasting cult reputation well beyond the late-1960s psychedelic boom.
Released in 1968, Spirit's second album, "The Family That Plays Together," stands as a testament to the band's innovative fusion of psychedelic rock, jazz, and blues. This groundbreaking record solidified Spirit's unique sound and cemented their place as one of the most experimental and forward-thinking bands
