  • Mike Varney – Producer, Shrapnel Records founder

The behind-the-scenes catalyst of the 80s shred boom, with late-70s punk fingerprints all over his origin story.

Mike Varney is the American producer and label boss who turned fast fingers into a business plan. I first clocked him in the late 1970s, thumping bass in San Francisco punks The Nuns, then moving to guitar with the Rocky Sullivan Band. Out in Novato, California, he founded Shrapnel Records in 1980, and by the early 1980s he was hunting new monsters via Guitar Player "Spotlight" and the U.S. Metal compilations. Mid-80s he supercharged the shred boom with releases tied to Steeler (with Yngwie Malmsteen) and Racer X, then kept the pipeline hot for Cacophony, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine and friends. Later he widened the map with Tone Center and Blues Bureau, still betting on feel as much as speed.

    CJSS Band Description:

CJSS came out of Cincinnati in 1984, and the name was no mystery once you knew the roll call: Chastain, Jinkens, Sharp, Skimmerhorn. That already tells you more than half the lazy band bios ever do. This was not some polished corporate metal unit built for hairspray and photo shoots. CJSS had bite. The kind of mid-80s American steel that sounded forged in rehearsal rooms, not boardrooms.

Back when records like this still turned up in import bins for sane money, CJSS always felt like David T. Chastain's rougher, hungrier outlet. The Chastain albums could lean into precision and flash; CJSS usually hit harder in the ribs. Russell Jinkens gave the songs a street-level snarl, Mike Skimmerhorn thickened the low end, and Les Sharp kept the whole thing moving like a chain-driven engine that did not particularly care about your furniture.

The timeline matters, because the old text mangled it. "World Gone Mad" was the debut, and it landed in 1986, not 1984. Later that same year came "Praise the Loud", with cuts like "Out of Control", the title track, and "Metal Forever" pushing the band deeper into that lean, fists-up heavy metal lane. And no, "Hell on Earth" does not belong to "Praise the Loud"; it belongs to "World Gone Mad".

After that first 80s run, CJSS did not drift into some tidy museum-label afterlife. They vanished, resurfaced, and eventually returned with "Kings of the World" in 2000. That is a very metal story, frankly: a flash of heat, a long silence, then one more crack of the whip. I still prefer the earlier records, where the riffs feel hungrier and the edges have not been sanded down for anybody.

"Mystery of Illusion" is the 1985 debut by Chastain, and it still carries that first-strike voltage that a lot of cleaner metal records never manage to fake. The Dutch Roadrunner pressing catches the band right as the formula locked in: sharp fretboard fire, strong melodies, and songs that move with purpose instead of just showing off. Not polite. Not overworked. Just heavy metal kicking the door off its hinges.

"Ruler Of The Wasteland" followed in 1986 and pushed Chastain further into battle-ready territory. The title cut, "One Day to Live" and "The King Has the Power" do not waste much time pretending to be subtle. This Dutch Roadrunner issue is pure mid-80s metal artillery: speed, melody, and enough riff muscle to flatten weaker records from the same year.

CJSS's "Praise the Loud" is the band's second full-length, also from 1986, and the U.S. Leviathan pressing is where the record feels most direct: no detours, no padding, just metal muscle. "Out of Control", the title track and "Metal Forever" do the heavy lifting here. Lean, sharp, and harder than a lot of puffed-up American metal that got more press and deserved less.

The French Black Dragon pressing of "Praise the Loud" keeps the same 1986 album but throws in a different cover, and that alone is enough to make collectors stop flipping for a second. I like pressings that misbehave a little. Same songs, same chassis, different visual hit. That is crate-digger catnip, especially when the record underneath still runs on Chastain's cutting riff-work and CJSS's no-frills heavy metal attack.

"World Gone Mad" is the first CJSS album, released in 1986, and it still carries that hungry debut-record voltage. "Hell on Earth" and the Led Zeppelin cover "Communication Breakdown" give it extra teeth, but what really sells it is the atmosphere: tough, restless, slightly rough around the edges, exactly as it should be. This French Black Dragon / Leviathan issue feels less like a trophy piece and more like a warning shot.
