Album Description:

In the heart of the 1980s heavy metal explosion, Canadian band Anvil took a daring leap with their 12" maxi-single, "Make It Up To You." Released in 1983, this rare French pressing showcases a band pushing the boundaries of their sound and exploring new musical territories.

Historical Context

Anvil, formed in 1978 by childhood friends Steve "Lips" Kudlow (vocals and guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums), had already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the heavy metal scene. Known for their high-energy live shows and raw, uncompromising sound, they were gaining a loyal following worldwide. However, the music industry was in flux, and heavy metal bands were under pressure to adapt to changing tastes.

Musical Exploration

"Make It Up To You" marked a significant departure from Anvil's previous work. The title track, a melodic hard rock anthem with a catchy chorus, showcased Kudlow's vocal range and songwriting prowess. The B-side tracks, "Metal on Metal" and "School Love," delved into more familiar heavy metal territory, but with a polished production and a hint of experimentation.

This musical exploration divided fans and critics alike. Some praised the band for their willingness to evolve, while others longed for the raw energy of their earlier material. Regardless, "Make It Up To You" demonstrated Anvil's versatility and willingness to take risks.

Studio and Band Members

The maxi-single was recorded at Morgan Studios in London, with Chris Tsangarides at the helm as producer. Tsangarides, known for his work with Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, and other heavy metal icons, brought a polished, professional sound to Anvil's music.

The band's lineup at the time consisted of Kudlow, Reiner, Dave Allison (guitar), and Ian Dickson (bass). This core group, with their tight musicianship and undeniable chemistry, would go on to create some of Anvil's most iconic albums.

Frontman Steve "Lips" Kudlow

Lips, as the band's frontman and creative force, played a pivotal role in shaping Anvil's sound and image. His charismatic stage presence, distinctive vocals, and songwriting talent made him a beloved figure in the heavy metal community. "Make It Up To You" offered a glimpse into his versatility as a musician and his willingness to push the boundaries of heavy metal.

Anvil's "Make It Up To You" 12" maxi-single may not be their most commercially successful release, but it stands as a testament to their adventurous spirit and willingness to experiment. It's a snapshot of a band at a crossroads, embracing new sounds while staying true to their heavy metal roots.
