About Mike Batt:

Mike Batt is an English singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, director and conductor. He was formerly the Deputy Chairman of the British Phonographic Industry.

Batt was born on 6 February 1949, in Southampton, England. He attended Peter Symonds School, Winchester. His blog refers to his role as cadet Company Sergeant Major at the school. Batt began his career in pop music at the age of eighteen when he answered an advertisement placed by Ray Williams in the New Musical Express on behalf of Liberty Records. He initially signed as a songwriter and artist to Liberty, but became head of A&R for the label only months later, at the age of nineteen.

Batt's first hit single was "The Hunting of the Snark", which reached number 12 in the UK Singles Chart in 1969. He then formed the Wombles, a fictional band of furry creatures who live in London's Wimbledon Common. The Wombles had a string of hit singles and albums in the early 1970s, including "The Wombles Song", "Remember You're a Womble", and "Wombling Merry-Go-Round".

In addition to his work with the Wombles, Batt has also had a successful solo career. His solo hits include "Bright Eyes" (a number 1 hit in the UK in 1975), "Schizophonia", and "The Music Machine". He has also written and produced songs for other artists, including Elkie Brooks, Art Garfunkel, and Olivia Newton-John.

Batt has also worked extensively in film and television. He has written the scores for a number of films, including Watership Down (1978), Caravans (1978), and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983). He has also composed music for television shows, including The Wombles (1973-1975), The Muppet Show (1976-1981), and The Magic Roundabout (1979-1981).

Batt is a multi-talented musician and artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. He is a talented songwriter, arranger, producer, and conductor. He is also a successful businessman, having founded his own record label, Good Earth Records, in 1973. Batt is a true Renaissance man who has made his mark in a variety of fields.

Note: These liner notes describe the start of Mike Batt's career and the making of the albums Super-Womble and Schizophonia.

Der Einstieg Eines der wenigen Multi-Talente zeitgenössischer Unterhaltungsmusik ist der Engländer Mike Batt, dem es gelang, innerhalb weniger Jahre vom unbedeutenden Musiker bei der Avantgarde-Band "Hapshash & The Coloured Coat" zum anerkannten Komponisten aufzusteigen. Bemer-kenswert dabei ist, daß Mike niemals Musik studiert hat, sondern sich alles als Autodikakt selbst beigebracht hat.

Seine Karriere begann im Alter von 18 Jahren, als er den Auftrag erhielt, für ein 18-köpfiges Orchester ein Arrangement zu schreiben. Mike ging mit einem Stapel Fachliteratur in Klausur und lernte über Nacht die Grundzüge des Arrangierens.

Im Studio legte er selbstbewußt seine Ideen vor - und war nach der Aufnahme ziemlich entsetzt über das Ergebnis. Dieses Entsetzen teilten seine Auftraggeber allerdings nicht, denn Mike hatte auf Anhieb genau das Gewünschte geliefert. Der Einstieg in dieses, als kompliziert geltende, Metier war geschafft.

Als nächstes bewarb sich Mike bei der Platten-firma "Liberty", die über eine Anzeige mehrere Hausautoren suchte. Er wurde eingestellt, stieg in der Firmen-Hierarchie schnell nach oben und saß zuletzt auf dem Stuhl des Produktionschefs.

Zwar war dieser Job sehr einträglich, aber Mike konnte sich mit der trockenen Büro-Atmosphäre nicht anfreunden. Es reizte ihn mehr, seine Brötchen als selbständiger Komponist und Texter zu verdienen. Er startete seine neuen Aktivitäten als Autor von Werbe - "Jingles" für das Fernsehen.

Das Kleingeld stimmte, und dann brachte ihm ein einziger Auftrag mehr Einkünfte als alles bisher.. .

Super - Womble Für die Jahre 1974 - 76 plante die englische Regierung eine landesweite Umweltschutzkampagne, bei der eine Gruppe pelziger Wesen, die "Wombles", als Sympathieträger auftraten.

Mike hatte die Aufgabe, den kleinen Wichten musikalisches Leben einzuhauchen. Das tat er so perfekt, daß die Singles der "Wombles" während der folgenden zwei Jahre ständig Spitzen-plätze in den englischen Charts belegten und mit Gold- und Platinscheiben überhäuft wurden. Mike wurde dadurch zwar bekannt, aber der Erfolg hatte auch eine Schattenseite: Trotz seiner ersten eigenen Single "Summertime City", die im September 1975 bis auf Platz 4 der Top Ten Englands stieg, war Mike nun als Spezialist kassenträchtiger, problemloser "Happy-go-lucky" - Songs bekannt, die erfolgreich, aber anspruchslos waren.

Schizophonia 1977 trat die entscheidende Wende ein. Mike hatte beschlossen, ein Soloalbum aufzunehmen, bei dem er die Titel selbst komponierte, textete, arrangierte und produzierte. Er war fasziniert von der Idee, klassische Musik mit Rockklängen zu mischen.

Viele hätten bereits an dieser Stelle gesagt, daß es das alles schon einmal gegeben habe: 1967 mit Moody Blues, 1969 mit Deep Purple, 1973 mit Ekseption und 1976 mit Rick Wakeman. Doch was Mike Batt mit seiner LP " Schizophonia" realisierte, war auf den Alben der o.g. Künstler höchstens im Ansatz zu erkennen.

"Schizophonia" ist eine innovative Kreation, die meisterhaft zeigt, daß eine Verschmelzung von barocken Harmonien, arabischen Melodien, Folk, Rock und Ballroom-Swing möglich ist, ohne das Ohr des Hörers zu beleidigen. Das Schlüsselwerk des Albums ist der Titel "The Ride To Agadir", der den Freiheitskampf marokkanischer Rebellen unter Mohammed V. zum Inhalt hat.
