D Records was a Houston-based independent label founded by Pappy Daily in 1958. Daily, a prominent figure in the Texas music scene, was already well-known for his involvement in country music and had previously co-founded the Starday label. D Records was an extension of his effort to promote regional talent, particularly focusing on country and rockabilly but also touching on other genres like blues. Pappy Daily also owned "DART" Records
Despite its relatively small size, D Records maintained an influential presence in the 1950s and 1960s, thanks largely to Daily's keen ear for talent and his connection with the Texas music scene. The label was also known for its close association with Glad Music, the publishing company that often published the songs recorded by D Records artists.
Collector Notes: "Andy Charles and The Blues Kings" recorded a session on 18 May 1959, reportedly featuring Johnny Winter on guitar—a claim that, if substantiated, would mark one of Winter's earliest known recordings. This period aligns with Winter's early ventures into the music scene in Beaumont, Texas, when he was beginning to build a reputation as a formidable guitarist with a distinctive style. At this stage, he was gaining attention for his mastery over blues guitar, a sound that would later become iconic.
Given the timing, Winter's involvement on this recording is plausible but remains unconfirmed. Archival evidence or documentation from the session would be the best path to verify this attribution, as direct confirmation could anchor this recording in Winter's early discography. If authenticated, it would offer a fascinating insight into his formative influences and musical direction, highlighting a point where he was experimenting with sounds that would later define his career.
