The impressive light show added a psychedelic touch, enhancing the nostalgic and reverent atmosphere.
Venue: Vogue Night Club, Indianapolis, Indiana
Date: 9 November 1998
Headliner: Johnny Winter
Other Acts: The Silvertones; Howard & The White Boys
The doors opened at 7:00 PM, and The Silvertones took the stage at 7:30 PM, performing for over an hour. They were followed by Howard & The White Boys, who delivered a fiery set. Johnny Winter was introduced at 10:30 PM and was on stage with his guitar by around 10:36 PM. There was a noticeable buzz from his amp, which required some line switching, though the buzz never fully disappeared. Despite this, the show got underway.
- Hideaway: A rather sedate 10-minute version of the Freddie King classic. Slightly underpowered, but smooth.
- Got My Mojo Working: A bit lackluster compared to Howard & The White Boys' rendition, which had nearly set the venue on fire earlier in the night.
- Sick and Tired: By this point, Johnny seemed to be warmed up and settled into his groove.
- Boogie Down Low: A knock-off of Louis Jordan's "Blue Light Boogie." Unfortunately, the bass and drums often drowned out Johnny's guitar. The high points came when the band would take it down low and let Johnny's guitar crawl. _...Just warming up, I guess..._
- Black Cat: A great number. From here on out, Johnny was fully in the groove.
- Walk The Dog: Johnny sat on a stool with his Firebird guitar and slide, delivering a crowd-pleasing performance.
- Johnny Guitar: A standard, but still rocking.
- Instrumental: A driving number to keep the energy high.
Show End: 01:10:00
It seemed everyone was surprised by how long it took Johnny to walk across the stage and strap on his guitar. There was a reverent silence in the room, as if everyone was witnessing a hero nearing the end of a long journey. It was clear that Johnny no longer had the energy he once possessed, but his vocals—though not raucous—were as full as his body could manage. The show may have been shorter than expected, but it was still entertaining. His slide guitar performance was undoubtedly the highlight of the night, as Johnny seemed to gain strength and intensity when seated.
Did I mention the light show? It was impressive, with shapes that looked just like poppies, adding a peaceful, almost surreal ambiance to the night.
