FRONT 242 - OFFICIAL VERSION 12" LP VINYL

Belgium, land of waffles, beer, and... industrial beats? Yep, you heard right. In 1987, Front 242, those lads from Aarschot with a penchant for military attire and synths that could melt your face, unleashed "Official Version." It was a bold move, a polished departure from their earlier grit, like trading in your favorite pair of combat boots for some shiny loafers.

But hold your Trappist ales, music fans! This wasn't a sellout, it was a sonic evolution. Imagine a Belgian praline: smooth, refined, but with a hint of unexpected bitterness. That's "Official Version" – a masterclass in EBM, a sonic journey that'll make you want to dance, think, and maybe even question authority, all while enjoying a good Belgian brew.

Front 242's 'Official Version': A Calculated Risk That Paid Off
Album Description:

In 1987, the musical landscape was a curious mix. Hair metal ruled the charts, synth-pop was on its last legs, and alternative rock was still finding its footing. Amidst this sonic mishmash, Belgian outfit Front 242 released their third studio album, "Official Version," an unapologetic, pulsating beast of an album that solidified their place as pioneers of Electronic Body Music (EBM).

The album marked a significant departure from their earlier raw and abrasive sound. "Official Version" was polished, refined, and dare I say, accessible. The band, still helmed by the core duo of Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen, delved deeper into their electronic explorations, incorporating more melodic elements and complex song structures while retaining their signature industrial edge.

Tracks like "Masterhit" and "Quite Unusual" became club anthems, their infectious beats and catchy hooks propelling the band to wider recognition. The album showcased a band that was not afraid to evolve, to experiment, and to push the boundaries of their genre. The track "W.Y.H.I.W.Y.G." (What You Hear Is What You Get) also became a fan favorite, known for its extended mix and pulsating rhythm. The album's closing track, "Angst," a short, instrumental piece that built on the album's themes of anxiety and tension, became a staple of their live shows and a cult favorite among fans.

Yet, "Official Version" wasn't without its detractors. Some die-hard fans lamented the band's move towards a more polished sound, accusing them of "selling out." The album's title itself, "Official Version," was seen as a tongue-in-cheek jab at those who questioned their artistic integrity. The use of sampling in tracks like "Masterhit" and "Television Station" also sparked debate among purists who questioned the band's reliance on technology.

The album's production was a collaborative effort between the band and label-assigned producer Colin Newman of the band Wire. This collaboration resulted in a slicker sound, a departure from the band's DIY approach in previous albums. The recording took place at various studios, including Synsound Studio in Brussels and Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, where legendary acts like David Bowie and Iggy Pop had recorded.

Despite the controversies, "Official Version" proved to be a commercial success, exposing Front 242 to a wider audience and solidifying their position as one of the leading figures in the EBM scene. The album's legacy is undeniable, its influence echoing through countless electronic and industrial acts that followed. It was a calculated risk that paid off, a testament to a band that refused to be pigeonholed and dared to evolve while staying true to their roots.

"Official Version" is more than just an album; it's a snapshot of a band at a crossroads, a testament to their artistic vision and their willingness to take risks. It's a reminder that even in the face of criticism and controversy, true artistry will always find a way to shine through.
